Planting a Garden

Planting a garden is such a great idea. Not only do you get fresh vegetables out of it, you also get to do honest, clean exercise outside which is absolutely healthy and you get to see the fruits of your labor.

While planting a garden is easy, there are some things you might want to keep in mind. The first is deciding where to set up your garden area. Decide what you want to plant and research whether that type of vegetable requires direct sunlight, moderated sunlight or only shade. Once you have determined this create your garden. Fertilizers are great as is compost. There are some vegetables such as cucumbers which literally will grow anywhere and you don’t need to worry about this. However, artichokes are less hardy and require real nurturing and devotion.

When you pick out your vegetable plants make sure they look alive and are not too wilted and have not already been attacked by insects. Take them home and plant them right away. Decide if you want to use Miracle Grow or similar to give them a head start. Make sure to water them every day. There are YouTube videos which show in slow detail the effects water has on plants. After watching this video I made sure to water every day as I wanted the highest yield of vegetables possible.

If you notice that insects are starting to attack your plants consider spraying them with some type of insecticide. If you want to go organic I have heard that pepper and Tabasco may work. My garden is prone to squirrels and birds and so I purchased some black netting to place over my vegetables. This has really cut down on the number of vegetables they are able to take and leave more for me and my family.

With a little work and time, you can grow a garden that will feed your entire family. This not only saves money it provides your family with the freshest vegetables available. If you have kids, get them out in the garden too. The more the merrier!
